Plastic Masterbatch Coloration & Conductive Modification
Color vs conductive modification in plastics masterbatch — pigment and conductive carbon black selection, dispersion windows, and trial alignment tips.
Plastics masterbatch is a common carrier for bringing carbon black into injection molding, blown film, pipe and electronic packaging. One need is coloration and hiding; another is antistatic or conductive modification. The two differ in carbon black type, loading and dispersion process — mixing them in one inquiry often picks the wrong direction.
Below we separate “coloration” and “conductive modification,” then give trial and inquiry tips. Formal metrics and grades follow mutually confirmed technical documents.
Color masterbatch: jetness, undertone and processability
Coloration usually prioritizes pigment carbon black jetness, undertone, ease of dispersion and impact on mechanical properties. Carrier resin (PE, PP, PS, ABS, etc.), screw design and pelletizing temperature decide whether carbon black wets and opens fully. Clarify first whether you need deep jetness appearance or a mid-jetness balance of cost and flow.

Conductive / antistatic modification: percolation beats “more is better”
Antistatic trays, conductive totes, shielding or grounding parts need a reproducible conductive network in the matrix. Higher-structure conductive grades often approach target resistance at lower loading, but excess can hurt impact, tensile or process flow. Build a loading–resistivity curve and fix dispersion/molding process before comparing materials.

Dispersion and masterbatch process windows
Whether for color or conductivity, masterbatch dispersion quality is “locked into” downstream parts. Watch:
- whether pre-dispersion / internal mixing or twin-screw shear opens aggregates without destroying structure that helps conductivity;
- whether re-dispersion in injection/extrusion introduces new agglomerates;
- whether moisture, volatiles and packaging dryness affect apparent resistivity or appearance.
